Astrology and Perfumes - Truth, Fluff, or Both?

by Katherine M. Durkes

Perfume is more than just fragrance, it is fashion. Like your clothing, your perfumes represent who you are, and the message you want to send, both to yourself and to other people. While there are many methods to find the right perfumes, using your astrology Sun sign is a popular one.But can you really choose good perfumes according to your sign? Is there any truth to which fragrances correspond to which sign of the zodiac, or is it all a bunch of fluff designed to sell you more perfumes? Whether you're an astrology believer or skeptic, you can still use recommendations for your sign to find great perfume matches for your personality.

Do specific scents have meaning?

Fragrance responses are learned, but scent definitely does evoke emotion and memory. According to modern research, very few fragrances have innate meanings, other than pleasant or not pleasant. Through cultural connotation and life experience, though, we learn to link specific scents to emotion and memory, and smelling certain kinds of perfumes really does evoke emotions and memories.

For example, most people can recognize a "mysterious" Oriental-type perfume. People in America think that Orientals are sensual and mysterious because they are linked with the romance of the spice trade from the Orient. Even though the response to Oriental perfumes is learned, it doesn't change the validity of the perfume type's meaning. Wearing an Oriental perfume can make the wearer feel sensual and mysterious, and it also can tell the people around the wearer that she is sensual and mysterious.

Astrology provides lists of probable perfumes for your type.

If you're a follower of astrology and you find it to be accurate for you, you should definitely check out recommendations for your sign. It's a great way to safely branch out into new fragrances -- since they're grouped by personality traits, they have a high probability of being good matches. It's best to choose a list for your sign that reflects different occasions, though -- five Leo "power" fragrances for the office aren't much help if you're looking for a good date perfume.

If you're more advanced, you can also use astrological fragrance recommendations to find matches for your rising (ascendant) sign as well. The ascendant sign is considered to influence our outward behavior and appearance, and perfume is often worn for the same purpose.

What if you don't believe in astrology?

Even if you don't believe in astrology, an organized list can still be useful! Many studies have shown that lists help people make decisions better, which comes as no surprise to most people. If you're not a follower of astrology, you can still read your horoscope as food for thought, right? It's just the same for zodiac perfume recommendations. Even if you don't believe that your birth date dictates your personality, you can still use the suggestions as a way of trying new fragrances.

There are just so many perfumes to choose from that it is simply helpful to have any kind of classification. Otherwise, you'll probably be tempted to stick to the same safe fragrances, just like a person who only wears black because "it always matches." It's great to have a signature scent or two, but sticking to the same few all the time can get old. Even for people who have a conservative style, variety is important -- no one wants to think of themselves as boring.

Perfume is something that makes you feel more like you. It should express and reflect the parts of yourself that you like best, whether you're shy, romantic, forceful, adventurous, or practical. Whether your zodiac sign accurately reflects you or not is something that only you know, but having a list of perfume suggestions organized by personality is bound to be helpful to many fragrance seekers.
