Why Your Perfume Might Be Giving You a Headache

by Danielle Nihill

Have you ever had someone walk by that had the most obnoxious perfume that gave you an instant headache? Perfumes can cause headaches, and it can be really irritating for those that are sensitive to these chemicals. Chemicals? Yes, most perfumes are 100% chemicals and nothing else.

Today, perfume and scents are a major business to be reckoned with. To further boost their profits, perfume makers switched to using cheaper, artificial ingredients. These synthetics are usually made with petroleum, as well as dangerous phtalates, which are used as a fixative so it will stick to your skin. These two ingredients are highly toxic, especially when used over long periods of time, however, the perfume industry has law on its side. Not only are companies allowed to use these harmful ingredients at free will, but they don't have to disclose a single ingredient in their perfumes and colognes. These are considered "trade secrets," but more likely ways to keep the information the public deserves out of their hands.

If you've ever felt sickened by the smell of a perfume, it isn't because it's too strong. You get sick from the exposure to the combination's of chemicals, which could be just about anything. Any natural ingredients are thrown out the window and replaced with a cheaper synthetic alternative that can be purchased in bulk or created in bulk for pennies (in comparison with the natural scent).

Back in the day, perfumes were made with natural ingredients. If you wanted to smell feminine, you sprayed on rose extract and flower oils. If you wanted a musky smell, there's natural sandalwood. For a sweet spicy scent, there's vanilla. All that you're paying for in modern perfumes is the fancy packaging and a brand name, which you toss into the garbage anyway. What's even scarier is that many of the ingredients in synthetic perfumes are the same ones in gasoline. So, if you'd like, fill up a spray bottle of gasoline and add some scent. It's the same thing.

Three Gross Ingredients Used in Synthetic Perfumes:

Propylene glycol

This is the same stuff used in antifreeze.

Phthalates

This is a plasticizer. That means it's something that makes plastic pliable, like reusable food containers. That's in many, many synthetic perfumes.

Benzene derivatives

These are those gasoline ingredients that were previously mentioned.

The moral of the story is, stay away from synthetic perfumes and scents! If you'd like to freshen up your home, don't spray chemicals into the air. Slice a lemon, cut up some fruit, bake some cookies, or open the window.
